Information for referrers

We are able to accept referrals from any source, including self-referrals. However, there are some things that referrers and potential clients need to be aware of.

Most of the client work at the Centre is undertaken by 2nd year and intern clinical psychology students under supervision. While the students are up-to-date with the latest research, they have varying amounts of clinical experience. Intern Psychologists are Registered Health Practitioners under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (2003).

Most of our students are on six month placements. We are able to work with clients who require longer-term intervention, but they may have to work with more than one therapist during the course of their treatment.

Our students are closely supervised. One way that we do this is to videotape some clinical sessions, with the client’s consent. These videotapes are viewed only by the supervisor, and are immediately erased. We are unlikely to accept a referral for a client who does not consent to occasional sessions being taped for supervision purposes. We do charge a fee for clients who are not seen under an existing contract, e.g., ACC, Health Waikato.

Fees
Although the Centre receives funding from a number of sources it is still necessary for us to obtain additional income by charging clients who use our clinical services. We need to do this to pay our operational expenses, and to fund ongoing training and research activities.

As the Centre has a professional training and education focus a significant proportion of our clinical services are delivered by clinical interns in their final year of professional training (year 6) at Waikato University. On occasion services are also provided by 5th year students. All services are delivered under the close supervision of the Senior Clinical Psychologists on our staff. These varying levels of training are reflected in our fee structure for both waged and unwaged.
